A non-shedding dog is one that does not shed hair or as much hair as you might expect with other breeds. As you can imagine, that’s a really desirable trait in the pets that we have living in our home!

However, it’s not just having a cleaner home that makes them an attractive choice, but also, for some people, medical conditions mean that it’s essential to reduce the amount of loose hair in the home. If you’re wondering, do Goldendoodles shed? Will a Schnauzer leave my home covered in hair, we have the answers!

Who Needs a Non-Shedding Dog?

Allergies

Allergies are a common reason for owning a non-shedding dog. Many people are allergic to their own pets, not just other people’s. It can be challenging to find out what is causing the allergy, but an increase in symptoms after your pet licks you is usually a good indicator that it is pet hair or dander to which you are allergic.

People with Asthma

For obvious reasons, if you already have problems with your respiratory system, then pet hair may cause your symptoms to become worse. Again, it’s not just what’s in the air that could cause problems; if your pet licks you or even gives you a kiss on the face when they get excited, then this could trigger an asthma attack.

This then means that people with asthma may need to find a breed of dog that doesn’t shed too much hair and be sure to wash their hands after handling a pet.

General Family Pet

Many people are after an attractive, friendly pet that they can have fun with. A non-shedding dog that doesn’t leave its hair all over the house can be a very appealing choice. As there are so many different breeds available, it’s important also to make sure that the breed chosen is a good match on their size, energy levels, and personality – don’t forget that some dogs are very active while others enjoy taking it easy!

Non-Shedding Dog Breeds

Different breeds of dogs will shed different amounts, so some breeds are going to be better suited to families with allergy sufferers or those who want a cleaner home

We’re shortlisted some of the best breeds for reducing the amount of hair shedding. Do remember to seek the advice of experienced breeders or rescue centers for more advice on the perfect dog for your home.

Poodle

Poodles are an excellent choice for families looking for a canine companion with a non-shedding coat. These are active and highly intelligent dogs that come in different heights. This is a breed that will need professional grooming on a regular basis to keep their coat in perfect condition, so don’t forget to add in the cost for this when considering this breed.

Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier is a loyal friend who loves their people. With proper training, they are calm, but they require exercise every day, no matter the weather. They have low grooming needs, so not much brushing will need doing.

If you’re not familiar with terrier breeds, do make sure that you carry out research first. Many terrier breeds still retain their working instincts, which can mean a lot of bark, digging, and hunting.

Chinese Crested

These beautiful dogs love human company and are affectionate little pets. They have a light build which makes them great for any home though supervision is needed for young children to handle them with care.

Do be aware that this breed has two distinct versions – a hairless and a powderpuff. Also, consider that some people think they are allergic to dog hair when it’s actually dander. So before you rush out to get a hairless dog thinking that will solve the problem, make sure to get allergies diagnosed correctly first.

American Hairless Terrier

This breed was specifically designed to appeal to families who wanted a pet without the allergies or mess of other types of dogs. The American Hairless Terriers may not shed, but they still require plenty of exercise and attention. As these guys like to be active, you’ll need to make sure that you’re up for this when you take on the responsibility of an American Hairless Terrier.

Irish Water Spaniels

If a family is looking for a dog with a lot of energy, they may want to consider the Irish Water Spaniel. They love water and require quite a bit of time outside swimming in lakes or rivers. This breed is excellent with older children who can play around in the water with them.

The Irish Water Spaniel has a thick curly coat that doesn’t shed, but it will still require regular grooming to keep it in top condition.

Maltese

Maltese dogs are gentle and affectionate companions who get on well with children. They’re alert and bold but also love cuddles. Their long coat needs brushing regularly to prevent matting and tangling, but this dog breed doesn’t shed.

However, due to their small size, they may not be suitable for homes with young children.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

These gentle dogs love to play and are very attached to their family. They’re incredibly friendly with everyone, young and old alike. Their coat is easy to maintain without any special requirements but will need regular grooming to prevent mats from forming.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier will need daily exercise because of their high energy levels. If you can’t be home a lot or have a large yard for them to run around in, this probably isn’t the dog breed for you.

Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise dogs are great for families with kids. They’re very affectionate but don’t need a lot of exercise, so they will even be suitable for seniors who can’t handle high levels of activity.

This breed doesn’t shed fur as their coat keeps growing, but that does mean that they need regular grooming. If the dog’s hair isn’t kept in check, it can become matted, which is painful and uncomfortable for them.
